As Jane Austen once said ‘There is nothing like staying at home for real comfort’. As a firm believer of this quote, I met with Toronto based Design Associate, Tehmeena Zaman to get an insight on the integral fundamentals of home decor. Her company, TEE DEZINES specializes in affordable design to suit your needs; but her main speciality is in Kitchen and Bath Design.
Tehmeena’s love for decorating spaces began at an early age which peaked as a teenager when she was heavily involved in the design, planning and interior decor of her family home that was being built at the time. It was a natural move for this talented artist to combine her love for architecture, design and zest for life. Completing her studies from the International Academy of Design in Toronto, Tehmeena realized that there was no other field she could see herself in.
When asked to recall a memorable decorating experience, Tehmeena narrates a time-crunched incident when a friend gave her a span of two weeks to transform his average looking apartment into a real ‘home’ to welcome his new bride. It helped that the client trusted her ability to create a fresh environment. As opposed to rushing to get the job done, Tehmeena certainly needed to make decisions quickly yet took the time to research the couple’s personalities to put together an appropriate home space to match their lifestyle.
Admits that she is quite picky in terms of colours, fabrics and themes, I got our designer to share some important tips on selecting colours:
• To make a room feel more spacious, it is advisable to go for a soothing colour scheme. With most condominiums and town houses adopting the open concept, muted colour walls fit nicely.
• It is preferable to add splashes of colour through accessories such as cushions, lamp shades etc.
• In terms of colour selection: the brighter the colour, the lower the quantity, and vice versa. Following this rule can help achieve perfect harmony and combination.
When moving into a new apartment, one is so overwhelmed with their new space that they tend to buy more furniture and decorative pieces than necessary. Just so we can avoid common home decorating mistakes in the future, Tehmeena shares some designer mantras with us, placing heavy emphasis on room proportions. It is crucial that you measure your room areas before purchasing large pieces of furniture in order to utilize space wisely. She believes that a home space can be both decorative and functional. We often buy things because they give us aesthetic pleasure, without envisioning how they function in our day to day life.
